Mounjaro is a prescription-only injectable medication initially developed to treat type 2 diabetes, now approved in the UK for weight loss in eligible patients. It comes in the form of a pen device that you self-inject once weekly. The active ingredient tirzepatide belongs to a class of treatments called incretin mimetics (GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists). In simple terms, it imitates two natural hormones – GLP-1 and GIP – that help regulate appetite and blood sugar:

Appetite Suppression: Tirzepatide activates GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which signals your brain that you’re full and slows down how quickly your stomach empties. This means after eating, you feel satisfied for longer and are less likely to overeat or crave snacks, by making you feel less hungry, Mounjaro helps you consume fewer calories.

Health Status: You do not have any medical conditions that would make Mounjaro unsafe for you. During the online consultation, you’ll be asked about your health history to screen for this. Additionally, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use Mounjaro. If you are planning to become pregnant, you’ll need to stop Mounjaro at least 1 month before trying to conceive. Mounjaro hasn’t been tested in pregnancy, and because weight loss isn’t recommended during pregnancy, alternative plans would be needed.

Safety Considerations: Mounjaro was approved for weight loss relatively recently (the MHRA approved it in the UK in November 2023 for obesity treatment). Because it’s new, it has a ▼ (black triangle) symbol, meaning it’s under additional monitoring by regulators.
